An illegal amber mining operation was uncovered in Rivne region

Law enforcement officials have dismantled an illegal amber mining and trafficking operation organized by accomplices in the Rivne district.

This was reported by the Sarny District Prosecutor’s Office as part of a pre-trial investigation into the illegal handling of the gemstone. In early April 2026, during searches of a rented house, over 80 kg of amber of various grades, equipment for processing it, scales, and mobile phones were seized.

The investigation established that the group members purchased raw materials from prospectors in Polissya, after which they sorted and processed them for further sale. A gemological examination of the seized stones has been ordered, and the issue of placing the property under seizure is currently being resolved. The case is being investigated under Part 2 of Article 240-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine; until a court decision is made, all individuals involved are presumed innocent in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine. While Russia continues its aggression, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies ensure compliance with the law regarding the use of mineral resources. Against the backdrop of Ukrenergo’s stable operations and the Inguar-4 development project, the fight against illegal mining remains a priority for preserving the state’s economic resources.

Previously, the deputy head of the SBU in Rivne region received over $22,000 from a businessman through an intermediary in exchange for ensuring unimpeded amber mining.

Charges have been filed against top SBU officials who “protected” amber mining operations.
