Hungary's new government has announced that it will abandon its policy of vetoing EU decisions
Hungary's new government has announced its intention to review its approach to cooperation with the European Union and to end the practice of using the veto as a tool for political pressure.
This was reported by Bloomberg.
“All too often, Hungary has been an obstacle to decision-making in Europe. We used the veto not as a last resort, but as a tool for political pressure,” said Anita Orbán, the nominee for foreign minister, during parliamentary hearings.
According to Orbán, one of the main priorities of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s new government will be to restore access to tens of billions of euros in EU funding, which was frozen due to Brussels’ concerns about the rule of law under the previous administration.
During the run-up to the elections, in which the “Tisa” party won by a landslide, Viktor Orbán’s government used its veto power to block a 90-billion-euro ($105 billion) loan to Ukraine.
Restoring the flow of EU funds was a key campaign promise of “Tisa” and is central to hopes for the country’s economic revival. Anita Orbán stated that the government will strengthen the independence of the judiciary and improve oversight of public spending.
Hungaryhas announced it will refrain from exerting pressure within the EU – Bloomberg.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Hungary has returned to Ukraine the funds and assets of Oschadbank that were seized by Hungarian intelligence services in March of this year.
Earlier, Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the issue of returning the frozen Ukrainian funds of Oschadbank would only be subject to negotiations after the new government is officially formed.
