Tribal forces seize control of Conoco gas field in Deir Az Zor
Armed tribal forces have taken full control of the Conoco gas field in Syria’s Deir Az Zor province following the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces from the site.
Al Jazeera correspondent Amir al-Ebad, who arrived at the gas facility, reported that tribal fighters entered the area and assumed control without major resistance. The site is now fully under their authority.
Access to the gas field has been restricted due to serious security risks. Al-Ebad said there are concerns about landmines as well as underground tunnels where armed fighters may still be operating.
A security sweep of the area is currently under way. Forces controlling the site are inspecting infrastructure and surrounding areas to secure the facility and prevent potential attacks or sabotage.
The Conoco gas field is considered one of the most strategically important energy assets in eastern Syria, and the shift in control could have significant implications for the balance of power in the region.
