In Mexico City, on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, large-scale protests by education workers are continuing, which could affect the opening match of the tournament.

On Thursday, June 11, the 23rd FIFA World Cup kicks off, which for the first time in history will be held simultaneously in three countries—the United States, Canada, and Mexico

The tournament matches will be hosted by 16 stadiums, and the opening match is scheduled to take place at the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

In the opening match, the tournament hosts, the Mexican national team, are set to face the South African national team.

However, the game is now in jeopardy due to mass protests by teachers and education workers that have been ongoing in Mexico City for several days.

A day before the World Cup opening, protesters blocked access to the Azteca Stadium, demanding higher wages and the repeal of pension reform.

In addition, protesters set up a tent city in the center of the Mexican capital. This area was supposed to host the official World Cup fan zone, but its opening is now in question.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the protesters’ actions a “provocation” and urged them not to obstruct the World Cup.

At the same time, the head of state stated that the authorities do not plan to use force to disperse the demonstrators.

According to Sheinbaum, the “provocation” consists of attempts to put pressure on the country’s soccer infrastructure during one of the world’s most important sporting events.

The president expressed confidence that law enforcement agencies will ensure the safe and peaceful conduct of the opening ceremony and the first match of the World Cup.

Despite the tense situation in Mexico City, organizers have not yet announced the postponement or cancellation of the 2026 World Cup opening match.

This was reported by RMC Sport.
