Romania's leading party has refused to support Eugen Tomac's new government

Romania's leading party has refused to support Eugen Tomac's new government

The National Liberal Party of Romania (PNL) has officially decided not to vote in favor of approving the “technocratic” cabinet, which the president has tasked the new prime ministerial candidate, Eugen Tomac, with forming.

During a meeting of the party leadership on June 11, the liberals unanimously opposed supporting the proposed government lineup, opting for a tactic of passive boycott—the PNL faction will be present at the plenary session of parliament to ensure a quorum, but will abstain from participating in the vote itself.

The protracted political crisis in Romania began in April 2026 due to the sudden collapse of the ruling coalition. At that time, the Social Democrats announced their withdrawal from the alliance, which automatically led to the loss of the majority and the subsequent resignation of the government headed by the Liberal representative Ilie Bolojan. In an attempt to resolve the situation in a non-partisan manner, Romania’s incumbent President Nicușor Dan officially nominated his advisor and Member of the European Parliament Eugen Tomac on June 4 to form a government of independent experts.

The Liberals’ refusal significantly reduces Tomac’s chances of securing the necessary number of votes in the legislature to legitimize his team. At the same time, rumors are circulating in the corridors of the Romanian parliament that the head of state has already developed an alternative “Plan B” in case of the predicted failure of the technocratic cabinet during the final vote by deputies, which could involve dissolving parliament or nominating a new compromise figure.

This was reported by the Romanian TV channel Digi24.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has an alternative plan in case parliament does not support Eugen Tomac’s candidacy for the post of prime minister.

An active process has begun in Romania to form a new cabinet of ministers under the leadership of the newly appointed Prime Minister Eugen Tomac
