Putin arrived in China amid sanctions and energy negotiations

Vladimir Putin has arrived in China for a two-day visit, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid sanctions pressure and Russia’s growing dependence on the Chinese market. The Kremlin expects both informal and formal meetings, but Russian media report that no specific breakthrough agreements are anticipated at this time.

Putin will be in Beijing on May 19 and 20. Talks with Xi Jinping are scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, after which the leaders will continue their discussions in an informal setting—specifically, over evening tea.

The Russian delegation includes a broad range of high-ranking officials—five deputy prime ministers, eight ministers, Central Bank of Russia Chair Elvira Nabiullina, and heads of major state-owned companies—which underscores the economic nature of part of the talks. Earlier, the Kremlin stated that the visit had been agreed upon back in February and is not linked to external political events, particularly Xi Jinping’s meetings with other world leaders.

According to Bloomberg, amid the war against Ukraine and sanctions, Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on trade with China, and the Kremlin is considering the possibility of using global energy fluctuations to strengthen its negotiating position. In particular, Moscow hopes that instability in the Middle East could influence Beijing’s stance on the pricing of future energy projects, including the “Power of Siberia-2” gas pipeline.

Sources close to the Russian government claim that the Chinese side is reportedly interested in accelerating negotiations, but there has been no significant breakthrough yet, and the negotiation process remains complex and multi-layered.

On May 19, China’s Foreign Ministry denied a Financial Times report that Xi Jinping had allegedly spoken negatively about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions during talks with Donald Trump.

On May 18, U.S. President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image in which he is allegedly depicted alongside an “alien” and accompanied by “space forces.”

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to hold a meeting with his national security team this week to discuss possible military action against Iran. According to Axios on May 18, these discussions are taking place amid deteriorating diplomatic efforts and rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
