Romania blacklists Polymarket for illegal crypto betting amid $600M election wagers
Romania’s National Office for Gambling has blacklisted Polymarket, calling it an unlicensed crypto-based betting platform. The regulator reported that trading volumes during recent elections exceeded $600 million, categorizing the activity as illegal gambling under national law.

While Polymarket describes itself as an “event trading” platform, authorities stated that users betting on future outcomes constitute gambling activity. Internet providers in Romania will now be required to block access to the site.
Despite growing regulatory pressure across Europe, Polymarket plans to relaunch operations in the United States, focusing on sports and event-related markets. According to Bloomberg, the platform expects to reopen limited trading for US users before the end of November.
