A Swedish court has authorized the transfer of a Russian vessel to Ukraine

A court in Sweden has ruled that the arrest of the cargo ship Caffa was lawful and has authorized its transfer to Ukraine as part of an investigation into the possible export of grain from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.

The vessel was detained in the Baltic Sea off the southern coast of Sweden in March of this year. According to the Swedish police and coast guard, it was sailing under a false flag and also violated maritime laws and safety requirements due to its poor technical condition.

The Ukrainian side is seeking the transfer of the vessel as part of an investigation into war crimes related to the illegal appropriation and export of property from the occupied territories.

According to Swedish prosecutor Håkan Larsson, the court confirmed the legality of the arrest and the possibility of transferring the vessel to Ukraine. However, the decision has not yet taken effect—the vessel’s owner has the right to file an appeal within three weeks.
