The U.S. suspended Vance's diplomatic mission due to Tehran's lack of response

The planned trip by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to Islamabad, which was to be part of negotiations with Iran regarding the nuclear deal, has been postponed. The reason was Tehran’s failure to respond to U.S. proposals. The diplomatic process has stalled, although the mission has not been officially canceled. This was reported by The New York Times.

The planned visit by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to Islamabad, where he was to participate in negotiations regarding the nuclear deal with Iran, has been postponed after Tehran failed to respond to U.S. proposals.

According to The New York Times, citing a U.S. official familiar with the process, Vance was scheduled to fly to the Pakistani capital on Tuesday morning, and the talks themselves were set to resume the following day, coinciding with the expiration of the temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. However, due to Iran’s lack of response, the dialogue has effectively been put on hold.

As the source notes, the trip has not been canceled entirely and could be resumed at any moment if President Donald Trump approves it. At the same time, Washington expects the Iranian side to confirm the authority of its negotiators to conclude a potential agreement. The delay has become yet another complication in the Trump administration’s attempts to reach an agreement that would limit Iran’s nuclear program. Against this backdrop, according to the publication, the Pentagon is simultaneously continuing to work through possible military scenarios in case diplomacy fails.

U.S. military officials emphasize that there is no direct decision to escalate, but various options remain on the table, and the U.S. maintains a significant military presence in the Middle East.

The current ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran expires at 4:50 a.m. local time on April 22, 2026. Pakistan’s Information Minister Attullah Tarar confirmed that Tehran has yet to respond, despite Islamabad’s efforts to act as a mediator.
