Holiday on June 24: Ukrainian city of Terebovlia celebrates 929 years
On June 24, Terebovlia celebrates City Day. It is one of the oldest cities not only in the Ternopil region but in all of Ukraine, with a history spanning more than nine centuries. This year’s celebrations will combine a tribute to the past with cultural events and charity activities in support of Ukrainian military personnel.
Terebovlia is often called the oldest city in Podillia. The first mentions of it date back to 1097. This year is considered the official date of the city’s founding. Over the centuries, Terebovlia has weathered the era of the princes, wars, sieges, and changes in national borders, yet it has managed to preserve its unique history and architectural heritage.
Previously, City Day was traditionally celebrated on July 7, on the feast of Ivan Kupala. After Ukrainian churches adopted the new calendar, the date was changed. Now, City Day is officially celebrated on June 24. It was first celebrated on the new date in 2025.
Where Does the City’s Name Come From?
Historians have several theories regarding the origin of the name Terebovlia. The most common one links it to the Old Slavic word “terebity,” meaning to cut down or clear a forest. It is believed that the first settlers developed these lands in precisely this way. Over the years, the name has become established and has survived to the present day almost unchanged.

What Makes Terebovlia Special
Terebovlia boasts more than just its venerable age. The city is situated on picturesque hills, and the elevation difference between its lowest and highest points reaches about 90 meters. This is quite unusual for a small city.

Many historical sites have been preserved here, attracting tourists every year. The most famous is Terebovlia Castle, whose history dates back to the 14th century. Other popular attractions include the Plebaniivsky Viaduct, considered one of the most beautiful railway bridges in Ukraine, the historic People’s House, and the city’s monasteries and churches. In 2001, Terebovlia was added to the list of historic settlements in Ukraine.
How City Day Is Celebrated
In peacetime, City Day was traditionally marked by concerts, fairs, sports competitions, and performances by artistic groups. Today, the format has changed due to the war, but the main idea remains the same—to unite the community around shared values.

In 2026, the celebration will be held for charitable purposes. Organizers are planning cultural events, performances by local artists, workshops, tours, children’s activities, and a fundraiser for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The city council emphasizes that each event will have not only a festive but also a socially significant purpose.
Interesting Facts About Terebovlia

In the Middle Ages, Terebovlia was the center of a separate principality and played an important role in the political life of Rus’. Another symbol of the city is the legendary Princess Olena, who, according to legend, helped organize the defense of Terebovlia during one of the enemy sieges. A Celebration That Brings Generations Together
