Svitolina is set to climb to seventh in the world rankings following the tournament in Miami
Ukraine's top-ranked tennis player, Elina Svitolina, has a chance to climb to seventh place in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings following the WTA 1000 tournament in Florida.
According to BTU, despite her loss in the third round, the Ukrainian currently holds seventh place in the live rankings with 3,965 points. This became possible because her main rival, Italian Jasmine Paolini, also exited in the round of 16 and lost more ranking points, dropping to eighth place.
The only player who can still overtake Svitolina in the race for seventh place is Canadian Victoria Mboko. In the fourth round, she defeated neutral player Mirra Andreeva and continues her quest for the Miami Open title. To overtake the Ukrainian in the updated rankings, Mboko must reach at least the final of the tournament, which will run in the U.S. until March 29, 2026.
Elina Svitolina’s sporting achievements on the international stage remain a key element of Ukraine’s cultural diplomacy amid Russia’s ongoing aggression. While Ukrainian athletes are competing for top spots in the world rankings, Russia continues its massive attacks on civilian infrastructure, as President Zelenskyy previously warned. Despite martial law and constant shelling of energy facilities by Russia, Ukrainian sports continue to demonstrate resilience and professionalism on the world’s most prestigious courts.
As a reminder, Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000.
Also, Novak Djokovic lost to Jack Draper in the round of 16 at Indian Wells.
