Trump suggested that a Russian strike on Kyiv could derail the peace process — Reuters
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the Russian missile strike on a residential building in Kyiv, which killed 24 people, could complicate or derail efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the war.
He made the remarks in a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from China, according to Reuters.
Trump said he discussed the war in Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and that both leaders agreed they want an end to the fighting.
“We would like to see this issue resolved. Things were looking good until last night, but last night they (the Ukrainians) suffered a serious blow. So it will happen (the end of the war). But it’s a shame,” Trump said, referring to the Russian strike on Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for Russia to be punished for the strike after laying red roses on the ruins of a residential building on Friday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit China next week and meet with Xi. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the exact dates will be announced shortly.
Peskov noted that Putin hopes to discuss Trump’s visit to China with Xi, as well as bilateral relations and international issues.
