Almost everyone in the Bundestag supports aid to Ukraine

Almost everyone in the Bundestag supports aid to Ukraine

Support for Ukraine in the German parliament extends well beyond the government coalition. The CDU/CSU parliamentary group stated that, in fact, only the “Alternative for Germany” party openly opposes aid to Kyiv. This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by CDU Bundestag deputy and CDU/CSU parliamentary group spokesperson on foreign policy issues, Jürgen Hardt.

Jürgen Hardt, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s spokesperson on foreign policy, stated that support for Ukraine in the German parliament remains stable despite domestic political disputes and the government’s struggling approval ratings.

According to him, support for Ukraine is backed not only by the parties in the coalition but also by part of the opposition—primarily the Greens. “I have the impression that we also have support for this policy toward Ukraine from a significant portion of the opposition—primarily among the Greens. In other words, the base of support for Ukraine in the German Bundestag is broader than the current governing coalition,” said Hardt.

At the same time, the politician explicitly stated that only one parliamentary force is currently openly opposed to supporting Ukraine. “Only ‘Alternative for Germany’ clearly opposes aid to Ukraine,” the MP emphasized.

The “Alternative for Germany” party has long been known for its skeptical statements regarding sanctions against Russia and military support for Kyiv. Its representatives regularly criticize arms deliveries to Ukraine and call for the resumption of dialogue with Moscow.

Separately, Jürgen Hart commented on rumors of possible disagreements between coalition partners—the CDU/CSU and the SPD—particularly regarding foreign policy and Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to him, there are no serious disagreements here. “In policy toward Ukraine, there are no differences between what Boris Pistorius, Lars Klingbeil, and Berbel Bass consider right, and what Friedrich Merz and Johann Wadephul consider right,” he stated.

In Germany, the stability of the new coalition has been the subject of active discussion in recent months amid falling approval ratings for individual parties and economic difficulties. However, the CDU insists that the government has sufficient support to function.

Hart said that the coalition plans to implement a series of reforms as early as this year, and the main results, according to him, should be noticeable in the next few years. “First of all, I am confident that the government will hold on. A whole series of important reform steps will be taken this year,” the MP said.

Germany remains one of Ukraine’s key partners in Europe—both in terms of military aid and financial support. Berlin is supplying air defense systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition, and is funding a number of programs for Ukrainian refugees and infrastructure reconstruction.

That is precisely why the Bundestag’s position and the stability of support for Ukraine in German politics directly influence further aid to Kyiv in the war against Russia.

Germany has announced Europe’s final rejection of Russian energy resources

As a reminder, the European Union is preparing for an energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East. Authorities are considering fuel rationing and the use of emergency oil reserves. Energy prices are expected to remain high for a long time.
