Nearly 42,000 people took shelter in the Kyiv Metro during the nighttime shelling

During the massive Russian shelling of the capital on the night of June 15, 2026, nearly 42,000 people took shelter in Kyiv Metro stations. Among all the residents seeking shelter underground from enemy missiles and drones were 3,400 children.

The agency reminded the public that 46 underground stations operate around the clock in shelter mode, and during air raid alerts, all station lobbies without exception are open to the public. To ensure a comfortable stay for large numbers of people, subway officials urged citizens not to bring bulky items, such as large tents and inflatable mattresses, as they take up too much space.

Instead, experts advise replacing them with compact sleeping pads and sleeping bags, as well as keeping all access routes to trains, restrooms, and station service areas completely clear. Residents are also advised to bring warm clothing or a blanket, as the average temperature in the shelters is 17–18°C, along with a supply of water, necessary medications, hygiene products, and, for pets, diapers and bags. As an alternative to the overcrowded outlying stations, Kyiv residents are advised to choose less crowded central stations in the future, including “Zoloti Vorota,” “Teatralna,” “Maidan Nezalezhnosti,” “Khreshchatyk,” “Ukrainian Heroes Square,” and “Palace of Sports.”

This was reported by the Kyiv Metro municipal enterprise.

As a reminder, Russia attacked the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, causing a fire.

On the night of June 14, as a result of a massive Russian attack in Kyiv, the antique market on Pochayna Street was completely destroyed by fire. After the fire, business owners and shopkeepers are trying to find any surviving items among the rubble and salvage what remains of their property.
