Retired FSB Major General Igor Laptev Committed Suicide in Moscow

On August 20, retired FSB Major General Igor Laptev, 83, was found dead in Moscow. His body was discovered in the afternoon in an apartment on Verkhnyaya Krasnosilskaya Street. Russian media report that Laptev committed suicide.

Laptev participated in combat operations in Afghanistan, after which he served for many years in the Soviet and Russian intelligence services.

At the FSB, he dealt with information security issues. Laptev also worked for the tax police, and in the late 1990s, he served as Deputy Minister of Taxes and Levies of the Russian Federation.

After leaving government service, Laptev became chairman of the board of directors of the “Informtekhnika” group of companies. According to Russian media reports, he was also awarded the Order of Honor.

Russian media outlets are reporting that Laptev committed suicide, but there is currently no official information regarding the cause of his death. The circumstances of the incident are under investigation.

After serving in the special services, Laptev worked in the tax police. In the late 1990s, he served as Deputy Minister of Taxes and Levies of the Russian Federation.

Starting in 1998, Laptev headed the board of directors of the company “Informtekhnika and Zvyazok, which later became part of the “Informtekhnika” group of companies.

The Russian opposition publication SOTA noted that “the company produces computer software and hardware.”

According to SOTA, the company’s largest contractors listed in public databases included the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the St. Petersburg telephone exchange.

Thus, over the years, Laptev has worked in Soviet and Russian law enforcement agencies, tax authorities, and the defense and technology sector.
