Hungary has deployed troops to guard the gas pipeline, allegedly due to the threat of sabotage

On April 6, 2026, the Hungarian Ministry of Defense announced the completion of the deployment of military units to provide enhanced protection for the Hungarian section of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline.

This was reported by Index.

According to Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, security for the strategic facility is being provided through continuous aerial patrols and the ground presence of six specialized units of the armed forces. Budapest officially informed NATO of the measures taken through the appropriate communication channels.

The decision to deploy the army was made following an incident on March 5 in Serbia, where explosives were discovered near the gas pipeline. Hungarian authorities viewed this as an act of sabotage aimed at destabilizing the region’s energy security. Amid global tensions and energy blackmail by Russia, Hungary is striving to ensure an uninterrupted supply of natural gas, which remains critically important for its economy. Currently, the situation at the facility is under control, but the military will remain on high alert until further notice. Global experts note that the militarization of energy infrastructure is becoming an inevitable trend in Eastern Europe amid hybrid threats.

As a reminder, Orbán convened the National Security Council following an attempted sabotage on a gas pipeline in Serbia.

Hungary accused Ukraine of attempting sabotage on a gas pipeline in Serbia.

Serbia stated that a migrant was supposed to blow up the gas pipeline using explosives from the U.S.

Serbian intelligence services and military units neutralized the threat of an attack on a critical infrastructure facility in the municipality of Kanjiža.
