Hungary Will Be Left Without a President
The President of Hungary will be removed from office early following the signing of the relevant amendment. He had previously made this decision under pressure from the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Hungarian Parliament Speaker Ágnes Forsthofer will serve as acting president until a new president is elected. According to Glavkom, she announced this on her official Facebook page.
According to Ágnes Forsthofer, on Monday, July 20, new constitutional amendments will take effect in the country, providing for the early termination of the powers of current President Tamás Szujók.
The Speaker pledged to responsibly carry out “her public duties in accordance with the Fundamental Law and the constitutional order of Hungary, with due regard for the dignity of the office and to the best of her knowledge and ability.”
“During this transitional period, I will do my utmost to carry out the tasks entrusted to me in a balanced, impartial manner and in the best interests of the country,” she emphasized.
Forsthofer explained that while she is serving as acting president, she will not be able to exercise her rights as a member of parliament.
The decision is not yet final. The day before, Forsthofer submitted an application to be appointed to this position by Deputy Chair Anikó Nád. The National Commission will decide on this on July 20.
Earlier, Hungary restored access to a number of Ukrainian news sites that had been blocked in response to reciprocal restrictions imposed by Kyiv. The decision marked a step toward partially unblocking the flow of information between the countries following the media conflict.
