The Hungarian opposition has pulled far ahead of Orbán's party

The opposition party "Tisa," led by Péter Magyar, has strengthened its lead in the polls among Hungarians three weeks before the parliamentary elections.

According to a poll by the Median Center conducted March 17–20, 2026, among voters who have firmly decided on their choice, support for Tisa reached 58%, while 35% of those surveyed are ready to support Viktor Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party. The opposition’s lead has grown by 3 percentage points compared to February’s figures.

Among the entire voting-age population, 46% of respondents are ready to vote for “Tisa,” and 30% for “Fidesz.” If this trend continues until Election Day on April 12, Magyar’s political party could secure a two-thirds constitutional majority in parliament. The poll also indicates that other political parties, including the far-right “Our Homeland,” currently fail to clear the 5% threshold required to enter the legislature.

The rise in the opposition’s popularity comes amid mass rallies in Budapest and a heated election campaign. Péter Magyar emphasizes the need for the country to return to Western democratic values and strengthen ties with the EU and NATO. At the same time, incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasizes in his campaign the threat of Hungary being drawn into Russia’s war against Ukraine should the opposition forces win.

Péter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition party Tisza, stated that if he wins the parliamentary elections on April 12, he plans to remove key allies of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from power, including the president and heads of the judiciary.

U.S. President Donald Trump has appealed to the citizens of Hungary to support incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12, 2026.
