A soldier was killed in Uzhhorod over $3,000; a suspect has been detained on charges of treason

The Uzhhorod District Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Ukrainian serviceman who was killed in Uzhhorod. A 26-year-old woman from Zaporizhzhia has been detained in connection with the case and is suspected of treason.

This was reported by the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, the woman was in contact with a representative of the Russian special services via a messaging app. In exchange for a monetary reward of $3,000, she agreed to obtain information from the soldier’s phone.

She later met the soldier and established a trusting relationship with him.

“For $3,000, she agreed to obtain information from the soldier’s phone,” the investigation materials state.

As law enforcement established, following her handler’s instructions, the suspect added an unknown substance to the soldier’s drink. After that, the man lost consciousness and died.

After the incident, she photographed the body and sent a report to her handlers. The woman also called an ambulance, attempting to stage an accident.

Law enforcement officers quickly identified and detained the suspect. During searches, evidence relevant to the investigation was seized.

The court imposed a preventive measure on her—detention without the right to bail.

Investigators are currently establishing all the circumstances of the incident. Once the results of the forensic examinations, including the medical-forensic examination, are received, a decision will be made regarding the final legal classification of the suspect’s actions.

Earlier, the Rivne District Court partially granted the claim of serviceman Dmytro Panchuk, who demanded the return of funds accumulated during his three-year captivity.

In the Cherkasy region, a former bank employee was exposed for embezzling over 1 million hryvnias from the account of the grandmother of a deceased serviceman.
