The Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a Russian naval base in Novorossiysk—the Russian Navy’s last major stronghold in the Black Sea.

"Last night, our Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a unique operation to strike the naval base in Novorossiysk—the Russian Navy’s last major stronghold in the Black Sea, more than 300 kilometers from the front line,” President Zelenskyy wrote.

According to him, “Palyanytsia” jet drones, “Neptune” missiles, and unmanned maritime systems were deployed against designated targets. Hits on air defense positions, piers, and seaport infrastructure have been confirmed.

The head of state thanked the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, and intelligence officers for the precision and results of the operation.

“The occupying fleet and all the infrastructure supporting it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues. The war must be stopped, and all reasonable proposals for diplomacy are on the table,” Zelenskyy added.

Up to one-third of the country’s total exports pass through Novorossiysk.

What NASA satellite data revealed

The fire at the port was detected by a NASA satellite system that tracks fire outbreaks and assesses their environmental impact. The images showed thermal anomalies at several locations in Novorossiysk.

Heat sources were detected near the grain terminal and the naval base, both of which are located close to Transneft’s “Sheshkharis” oil terminal. No visible fires were detected directly at the oil facility in the images—likely due to the insufficient geolocation accuracy of the satellite data.

According to local authorities, Novorossiysk and the entire Krasnodar Krai were also attacked overnight by several hundred Ukrainian drones.
