Moscow authorities admitted that 60 Ukrainian drones had flown to them
On the morning of June 16, 2026, the Russian capital and the Moscow region were attacked by dozens of strike drones, causing a massive collapse in the aggressor nation’s air traffic.
According to official statements by local authorities, Russian air defense systems allegedly destroyed all aerial targets approaching the city.
Due to the threat of powerful explosions, the Russian military leadership was forced to completely close the airspace over the region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported on the consequences of the massive nighttime attack on his official Telegram channel. The Russian official attempted to reassure the public, emphasizing the high effectiveness of the defense systems.

“After 5 a.m. on June 16, 60 drones were destroyed as they approached the capital,” the head of the Russian capital stated.
Despite the authorities’ attempts to downplay the scale of the incident, the attack caused serious infrastructure disruption. All four major airports in Moscow—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—were closed throughout the night.
Russian airlines delayed dozens of flights, and passenger planes were rerouted to alternate airports in other regions of the Russian Federation. It was only toward morning that these restrictions on civilian aviation were lifted.
Independent monitoring sources and eyewitnesses report numerous explosions in various areas of the Moscow region. According to their reports, “air defense systems were active in Pavlovsky Posad near Moscow, and one of the drones was shot down over the city.”
In addition, explosions from the downing of drones were clearly heard in Ramenskoye and Zhukovsky.
