Zelenskyy commented on Putin’s statements regarding the end of the war
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the latest statements made by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine.
The head of state said this during a conversation with journalists.
According to Zelenskyy, the signals Putin is sending are not new.
“I have always said that he (Putin) does not want the war to end. The question is whether he can continue it. That question depends on our partners, on their pressure — first and foremost sanctions and diplomatic pressure,” he told journalists.
The Ukrainian president also commented on the position of the United States, which, according to him, believes that Putin is ready to end the war.
“We support the Americans’ (peace) initiatives… I do not think that the Russian economy is capable of continuing this war at the scale it previously had. If sanctions remain in force, and if Putin now slows down this diplomatic wave — which is the largest it has been in a long time — then the United States will increase pressure on them,” Zelenskyy noted.
On December 17, during an expanded meeting of the board of Russia’s Ministry of Defense, Putin stated that Russia would “undoubtedly” achieve its military goals in Ukraine.
According to him, Russia prefers diplomatic means to achieve its objectives and eliminate the alleged “root causes” of the war, but if Ukraine and the West refuse negotiations, it will “liberate its historical lands” by military means.
Putin’s statements were made against the backdrop of renewed efforts by the United States to reach a peace agreement and end the war in Ukraine.
Putin also claimed that the war against Ukraine was allegedly not started by Russia in 2022, but by the West.
