FedEx orders 2,000 Harbinger electric trucks — Electrek

FedEx has ordered 2,000 fully electric Class 5 and 6 trucks from U.S. startup Harbinger. The deal’s value, according to Electrek, may exceed $300 million. This is Harbinger’s largest order.

Expanding the electric fleet

The order concerns medium-duty electric vans that will replace the company’s diesel vehicles. Electrek notes that the contract is considered one of the largest binding orders for medium- or heavy-duty electric trucks in history.

FedEx plans to fully electrify its operational fleet by 2040. Paul Melander, the company’s senior vice president of safety and transportation, said that electrification on this scale requires vehicles capable of meeting the demands of intensive operations while also providing economic benefits. According to him, expanding the use of Harbinger vehicles should help achieve electrification goals and reduce fuel and operating costs.

Estimated savings

Harbinger estimates that each delivered electric truck will reduce FedEx’s fuel costs by approximately $20,000 per year compared with the diesel vehicle it replaces. The manufacturer also says its vehicles are designed for a 20-year service life.

According to Harbinger’s calculation, 2,000 vehicles could provide up to $800 million in total fuel savings over 20 years. Electrek also writes that over their projected service life, these trucks could help avoid more than 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Harbinger CEO and co-founder John Harris said that previous cooperation had given FedEx an opportunity to assess the company’s vehicles’ operational and economic benefits.
