Tesla's chief designer announced that the new Roadster will be unveiled soon
Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holtzhausen, stated that the new-generation Roadster production electric sports car will be unveiled very soon. He made this announcement on an episode of *Jay Leno’s Garage*, according to InsideEVs.
Host Jay Leno noted the prolonged delays in the model’s release. Von Holtzhausen did not give a specific date, but he assured viewers twice that the production model would premiere in the near future.
Tesla first unveiled the next-generation Roadster in 2017 during the presentation of the Tesla Semi electric truck. At the time, the company stated that the sports car would be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than two seconds, reach a top speed of 250 miles per hour, and have a range of up to 620 miles. Production was scheduled to begin in 2020.

Subsequently, the timeline was postponed several times: after 2020, the target was set for 2022, and then 2024. In June, Elon Musk told investors that the Roadster’s unveiling was set to take place in about a month, meaning roughly in August.
According to InsideEVs, one of the reasons for the delay may be the SpaceX package. Tesla has announced a cold-gas propulsion system that it plans to use in the Roadster to achieve the car’s unique performance characteristics. At the same time, it is unclear what stage the collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX—and the development of this solution—is currently at.
Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravi, previously called the Roadster the last and best driver-focused car Tesla will produce, as the company is shifting its focus to driverless robotaxis.
