Singapore checks whether China recalls affect local cars
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) is checking whether large-scale recalls in China over risks associated with electronic door systems affect cars in the country. The regulator said it had not received reports of problems with opening doors or accessing mechanical emergency door-opening mechanisms.
As Channel NewsAsia reports, no authorised dealer in Singapore has so far announced a recall linked to the Chinese campaign. The LTA is engaging with car dealers and manufacturers to determine whether vehicles in the country include models that may be affected by the issue.
Emergency door opening
The authority said that vehicles with electronic doors approved by the LTA already have mechanical backup mechanisms. They allow passengers to open the doors from inside in an emergency.

The regulator also noted that it regularly reviews vehicle safety requirements in light of technological developments, including electronic door systems. Car owners with questions about their vehicles were advised to contact authorised dealers.
Recalls in China
Earlier this month, China launched its largest vehicle recall campaign over concerns that internal mechanical emergency door-release handles in some cars with electronic systems may be difficult to locate or use during an emergency.
China plans to ban hidden door handles from 2027 — a design popularised by Tesla and widespread among Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles in China, while another eight Chinese carmakers have filed recalls over similar safety risks. The LTA urged drivers and other vehicle users to familiarise themselves with the location and use of the mechanical emergency mechanism in their vehicles.
