BYD launches Sealion 6 DM-i hybrid SUV in South Korea

Chinese automaker BYD has launched the mid-size plug-in hybrid crossover Sealion 6 DM-i in South Korea. The model is expected to compete with vehicles from Hyundai Motor and Kia amid growing demand for hybrid cars in the country.

As The Korea Herald reports, the Sealion 6 DM-i is equipped with the DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligence) system, which automatically selects one of four modes depending on speed, battery charge and road conditions: electric, series hybrid, direct engine drive or parallel hybrid mode.

Range and charging

The crossover received an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade battery. Its certified all-electric range is 70 km. According to BYD Korea, with a fully charged battery and a full tank, the vehicle can travel more than 1,000 km.

Official combined fuel consumption is stated at 15.2 km per liter, while efficiency in electric mode is 4.2 km per kWh. The model supports 18 kW DC fast charging: charging from 30% to 80% takes about 30 minutes.

Equipment and price

The Sealion 6 DM-i is 4,775 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,670 mm high. In terms of dimensions, the model is positioned between the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe. The cabin features a 15.6-inch central display with localized Kakao Map navigation. It also includes power adjustment, heating and ventilation for the front seats, heating and recline adjustment for the rear seats, as well as a panoramic glass roof.

The Sealion 6 DM-i costs 37.5 million won in South Korea, or about $27,250. For comparison, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid in the country costs from 33.18 million to 40.82 million won before tax benefits are applied.
