Toyota unveils hydrogen-powered Sora bus with a range of more than 300 km — InsideEVs
Toyota and Isuzu have unveiled the second-generation Sora city and suburban bus powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which will be produced in Japan. According to InsideEVs, the model’s claimed range exceeds 300 km — approximately 50% more than that of the first-generation Sora, introduced in 2018.
Hydrogen system and electric drive
The bus’s fuel cell is mounted on the roof and generates electricity for the Isuzu electric powertrain. The Sora has two electric motors rated at 110 kW each. Their combined output is 295 hp and 969 Nm of torque.
The electric motors are powered by an 88 kWh lithium-ion battery, while the fuel cell can deliver up to 113 kW of power. The three hydrogen tanks on the roof can be refilled in around 10 minutes. Toyota says future refuelling stations will be able to halve that time.

Versions and safety systems
The bus has a completely flat floor and an optional one-touch wheelchair restraint system. The model will be available in four versions: two intended for city routes and two for suburban routes. They will differ in seat layout.
The Sora can also supply electricity from its high-voltage battery through an external power supply system, serving as a backup power source. The Emergency Driver Stop System and Driver Status Monitor systems can stop the bus if they determine that the driver can no longer operate it.
Production of the second-generation Toyota Sora is planned to begin in fiscal year 2026, which will run from April 2026 to March 2027. The buses will be manufactured by J-Bus, a joint venture between Isuzu and Hino Motors, at its plant in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture.
