US automaker General Motors plans to introduce hybrid models in its lineup in the United States. GM Vice President of Propulsion Engineering Mike Anderson confirmed these intentions but did not specify when the new vehicles would appear, CNBC reports.

According to Anderson, the company’s long-term goal remains unchanged: a fully electric future. At the same time, the path toward it will involve the use of different technologies. Throughout this decade, GM has been largely absent from the hybrid market, as it directed resources toward electric vehicles.

Demand for hybrids is growing

Sales of hybrid vehicles in the United States rose by 23% in the second quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. According to Cox Automotive, their share reached a record 16.3% of vehicle sales in the country from April through June. The share of fully electric vehicles during this period was about 5.8%.

Hybrid models are growing fastest in the compact crossover and SUV segments, as well as among mid-size vehicles. Such vehicles typically combine a gasoline engine with electric motors and a battery, which can improve fuel economy and vehicle performance.

Plans and forecasts

GM currently offers only one hybrid model — a version of the Chevrolet Corvette. The company’s last major project in this segment was the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, whose production was discontinued in 2019.

In mid-2024, GM said it planned to introduce plug-in hybrids by 2027. AutoForecast Solutions predicts that the company will begin offering such models in late 2027 or early 2028. Casey Selecman, director of powertrain forecasting, said GM plans several PHEVs in different segments, from the Equinox to the Silverado. Anderson also said that GM’s strategy would combine in-house developments and technologies from external suppliers depending on cost, segment, and the specific product.
