Toyota Halts Development of Next-Generation Electric Vehicle Under the Lexus Brand — Kyodo

The Japanese automaker Toyota has officially decided to completely halt further development of a next-generation electric sedan under its premium Lexus brand.

This was reported by the leading international news agency Kyodo News, citing its own informed sources within the company.

The reason cited for this move is global changes in the eco-friendly vehicle market and a decline in demand for battery-powered cars.

Official Bucharest and global analysts attribute this to a strategic shift by the auto giant.

Company management is forced to respond to current economic challenges and the decline in interest among European and American consumers in pure electric powertrains.

Despite the closure of this specific project, Japanese engineers plan to use their accumulated experience to develop hybrid powertrains.

“It is believed that this decision reflects a slowdown in growth in the global electric vehicle market, although the automaker still plans to continue developing relevant cutting-edge technologies for future products,” experts note.

The Japanese manufacturer has abandoned production of a promising model that was set to become the brand’s technological flagship in the coming years.

This car was designed to be the main competitor to American and Chinese premium electric vehicles.

“The canceled model is the production-ready Lexus LF-ZC EV, which was scheduled to go into production in 2027,” the authors of the publication clarify.

The concept car featured a revolutionary modular architecture and new software.

The upcoming model was intended to attract buyers with its advanced range capabilities and rapid battery recharge speeds.

The manufacturer had high hopes for this lineup during the first closed-door presentations at international auto shows.

“The car, which boasted fast-charging capabilities and an extended range, was unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show back in October 2023,” the publication’s journalists note.

At the same time, the brand’s overall performance in this segment showed a positive trend during the previous reporting period.

The company was able to significantly increase sales volumes thanks to the popularity of its existing electric crossovers.

“It is noted that global sales of Toyota electric vehicles in 2025 rose by 42.4% compared to the previous year, to over 190,000 vehicles,” according to official financial statistics.

Buyers from around the world actively chose the first production models of eco-friendly SUVs.
