Ukrainians are buying more gasoline-powered cars: which engines are they choosing in 2026?
In May 2026, vehicles with internal combustion engines strengthened their position in the Ukrainian new passenger car market. Their combined share exceeded 60% of all sales.
According to Ukravtoprom, gasoline, diesel, and LPG-powered vehicles together accounted for more than three-fifths of the market. For comparison, in May of last year, this figure stood at 54.3%.
Gasoline-powered cars remain the most popular among Ukrainians. In May, they accounted for 39.9% of new passenger car sales, compared to 36% a year earlier.
Hybrids took second place, with their share rising from 27.1% to 30.8%. The popularity of diesel models also increased—their share rose from 18.3% to 20.7%.
At the same time, the electric vehicle segment saw a noticeable decline. While they accounted for 18.4% of the market in May 2025, their share has now fallen to 8.5%.
Cars equipped with gas cylinders continue to be a niche segment, accounting for less than 1% of the new car market.
The sales leaders in their respective categories are:
• gasoline cars — Hyundai Tucson;
• hybrids — Toyota RAV4;
• diesel cars — Renault Duster;
• electric cars — BYD Sea Lion 06 EV;
• cars with LPG systems — Hyundai Tucson.
Thus, the Hyundai Tucson became the most popular model in two segments of the Ukrainian car market at once.
