Out of jealousy, a Kyiv woman set her neighbor's door on fire; the woman was detained
In Kyiv’s Desnianskyi District, law enforcement officers detained a 49-year-old local woman suspected of setting fire to her neighbor’s apartment door out of jealousy. No one was injured in the fire.
According to law enforcement officials, a 39-year-old woman contacted the Desnianskyi Police Department to report that the front door of her apartment in a high-rise building had caught fire. An investigative team and firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.
Police quickly determined that a 49-year-old Kyiv resident was involved in the arson. She was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The investigation revealed that the woman was jealous of her neighbor’s relationship with a man she knew and went to her apartment to “settle the score.” When the resident did not open the door, the suspect set it on fire and then returned to her own apartment one floor above.
Under the procedural supervision of the Desnianskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, investigators informed the detainee that she was suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—intentional damage to another person’s property committed by arson.
The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment.
