Photo: A service member with special status was detained in Kyiv following a fatal traffic accident
In Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained a 39-year-old driver of a Daewoo Nubira who is suspected of causing a fatal traffic accident in the Obolon district. According to police, the man showed signs of intoxication and refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene.
The accident occurred on the evening of July 26 at around 9:00 p.m. on Stepan Bandera Avenue. According to preliminary information, the driver of the Daewoo Nubira was traveling at high speed, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into the rear of a Volkswagen Passat that was traveling ahead in the same direction.
As a result of the collision, the 57-year-old driver of the Volkswagen sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The Daewoo driver, who sustained moderate injuries, was hospitalized. According to police, he was identified as a 39-year-old military servicemember who was on unauthorized leave from his unit.
Law enforcement officers detained the man in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Police noted that, based on outward signs, he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol; however, he refused to undergo a breathalyzer test using a “Drager” device. The final conclusions will be determined by the results of the forensic examination.
A criminal case has been opened regarding the traffic accident under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in the death of the victim. The decision on whether to notify the detainee of the charges against him is currently being considered.
