Kyiv residents have been warned about fake emails sent on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and the State Energy Regulatory Commission

Kyiv residents have been warned about fake emails sent on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and the State Energy Regulatory Commission

A mass mailing of fake emails has been detected in Kyiv; these emails are being passed off as official notifications from the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the State Energy Supervision Inspectorate.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, in these emails, scammers claim that a “critical discrepancy between distributed and recorded power” has allegedly been detected at the recipients’ addresses. They also claim that unauthorized tampering with meters or the use of uncertified equipment has allegedly been detected.

The Ministry of Energy emphasized that such messages are fake. The ministry explained that it does not conduct such inspections or send out such letters, and that the State Energy Regulatory Agency has not performed any remote analysis of consumption balances.

“The scammers’ goal is to intimidate citizens, sow panic, and create social tension in society. In addition to psychological pressure, such letters may contain malicious hyperlinks designed to steal personal data,” the Crisis Response Center noted.

Ukrainians were urged not to click on suspicious links and, if they receive such messages, to contact their electricity distribution system operator, the Ministry of Energy’s hotline, or the State Energy Regulatory Commission.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

On July 14, power was temporarily cut off in parts of the Podil and Obolon districts of Kyiv. The outage was caused by an emergency situation in the capital’s power grids.

In the Kyiv region, scammers who defrauded people under the guise of charity were exposed.
