Lubinec sharply criticized the fare increase in Kyiv

Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada’s Human Rights Commissioner, criticized the decision to sharply increase public transportation fares in Kyiv. According to him, the increase in the cost of a subway ride from 8 to 30 hryvnias was not properly justified on economic grounds, and this move could lead to higher prices for goods and services and place additional financial pressure on the capital’s residents.

“Just yesterday, a metro ride cost 8 hryvnias; today, it’s 30. That’s a 3.75-fold increase, or 275%. But what justification is there for this increase? None whatsoever,” the statement reads.

Lubinec emphasized that the fare increase will affect not only metro passengers but also the cost of transportation, delivery, and other services. He also noted that without an increase in wages, pensions, or social benefits, the new fares will place a serious financial burden on many Ukrainian families. At the same time, the ombudsman compared the situation to that in Kharkiv, where public transportation remains free for residents.
