A 65-year-old man died in a shelter during the attack on Kyiv

On the night of September 24, during a Russian attack on Kyiv, a 65-year-old man died in an underground passage in the Solomyanskyi district. He had gone there to wait out the shelling, as he did during every air raid alert. Medical personnel who arrived at the scene pronounced him dead.

 

During the Russian ballistic attack on Kyiv on the night of September 24, 65-year-old Viktor Yerko died in one of the underground walkways in the Solomyanskyi district. Hromadske journalist Denys Bulavin witnessed the incident. According to him, the man came to the underpass with his chair. He sat down and lost consciousness a few minutes later.

 

The man began to choke, and his face turned blue. Medical personnel were called to the scene, but they were unable to save him. “When he lost consciousness, his phone fell from his hands. The screen was showing a flight tracker,” the journalist said. The Kyiv City Military Administration also reported the man’s death.

What is known about the deceased

The deceased was 65-year-old Viktor Yerk. He was originally from the Chernihiv region. The man worked in the construction industry his entire life, and he continued to work even after retiring. Viktor is survived by two children and two grandchildren. His daughter, Anna Venediktova, left Ukraine after the full-scale invasion began. Despite the distance, they spoke every day.

 

Anna said that her father loved his grandson Mark very much. When the boy was born, Viktor often visited the family and brought him gifts. “The best dad and grandpa. He was so happy when his grandson was born. He visited us all the time and brought whole bags of gifts. My son knew his grandfather until he was 3, but when the full-scale war began, we had to leave, so we hadn’t seen each other for almost 5 years,” she said.

 

According to his daughter, Victor lived alone and tried to get to a shelter every time there was shelling. This time, too, he did everything he could to get to a safer place. “His heart couldn’t take the stress. He lived alone and went to the shelter every time. But, unfortunately, that didn’t save him. We love him very much. His grandson Mark will never get to hug his grandpa again,” said Anna.

She learned of her father’s death on September 24. At first, she was only told that Victor had died in an underground passageway. She later saw the details of what happened on the news. According to Anna, coming to terms with the loss is especially difficult because she spoke with her father every day and didn’t expect that their conversation might be their last. This was reported by hromadske.

As a reminder, Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv on the night of September 24, leaving two dead and eight injured.

Earlier, in Sumy, water supply was restricted following an airstrike due to power outages.
