In Kyiv, a man stole 2 million hryvnias from his neighbor's apartment
In the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, a 47-year-old man took advantage of some keys that had been left behind and stole a safe containing cash and jewelry worth about 2 million hryvnias from his neighbor’s apartment. He took the stolen items out of town and buried them in the woods, but the police quickly identified him and arrested him.
As law enforcement discovered, the victim’s son had accidentally left a backpack containing the keys to his apartment in his neighbor’s car. Taking advantage of this, the man waited until the owners were away from home, unlocked the apartment with the key, and removed the safe. He then returned the keys to the backpack to cover his tracks.
The perpetrator transported the stolen safe outside the capital and buried it in the woods, keeping only a portion of the cash for “petty expenses.” Through criminal analysis, police quickly identified the thief and detained him.
Investigators informed the suspect that he is suspected of grand theft (Part 5 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine); he faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. Currently, the court has remanded the suspect in custody with the option of posting bail in the amount of nearly 666,000 UAH.
