A man in Kyiv has been charged with making threats against Ukraine's chief rabbi
A 44-year-old resident of the capital is under investigation for posts on social media containing death threats against Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi Moshe Reuven Asman. According to law enforcement officials, the man also incited interfaith hostility and threatened military personnel.
Investigators from the Desnianskyi Police Department, in collaboration with Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officers, identified a 44-year-old Kyiv resident who posted a message on his social media page containing death threats against Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi.
In addition, the suspect made posts on his personal social media profile in which he degraded the honor and dignity of national minorities, made insulting remarks and threats to damage their property, and threatened to kill military personnel and law enforcement officers.
Investigators from the Desnianskyi Police Department, under the procedural supervision of the Desnianskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, notified the man that he was suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 129 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — death threats, where there were real grounds to fear that the threat would be carried out, committed on the grounds of religious intolerance; and Part 1 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of the equality of citizens based on their race, nationality, regional origin, religious beliefs, disability, or other characteristics.
The penalty under the most serious charge provides for up to five years of imprisonment.
