Air quality in Kyiv has deteriorated due to the heat and a high-pressure system
On Tuesday, August 4, a deterioration in air quality was recorded in several districts of Kyiv. According to the city’s monitoring system, the worst situation is on the right bank of the capital, where elevated levels of ground-level ozone were recorded.
According to a map from the Kyiv City State Administration’s Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation, the highest air quality index (CAQI)—100—was recorded on European Union Avenue, Shchuseva Street, and Turivska Street. In the “Kyiv Digital” app, the air quality on Shchuseva Street is rated as hazardous and marked with a red level.
Natalia Ptukha, head of the media relations department at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, explained that the deterioration in air quality is linked to a high-pressure system that has been lingering over the region for several days. According to her, in calm and windless weather, harmful pollutants do not disperse but accumulate in the lower atmosphere. This is a typical situation during an anticyclone. When calm, windless weather persists for several days in a row, all pollutants from emission sources gradually accumulate in the atmosphere.
At the same time, Ptukha emphasized that the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center does not conduct online air quality measurements, so it cannot officially confirm the pollution level. Daily readings will be available later, and real-time data is currently being published by the Central Geophysical Observatory.
According to weather forecasters, the current situation may persist until Friday, August 7. A change in weather conditions is expected: stronger winds, possible precipitation, and a drop in air temperature, which should help disperse pollutants and improve air quality in the capital.
At the same time, background radiation levels in Kyiv remain within normal limits.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, August 4, clear and cloudless weather with no precipitation is forecast for Kyiv. Nighttime temperatures will range from +21°, and during the day, thermometers will rise to +33°...+34°.
According to data from the Boris Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory, the average monthly air temperature in Kyiv in July was 20.8°C, which is 0.5°C below the climatic norm.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a warning about temperatures reaching 38° and a fire hazard.
