Kyiv Issues Warning About Disruptions in Fare Payments
In Kyiv, temporary disruptions in fare payment services may occur on the night of September 29. Maintenance work will begin at 10:00 p.m. due to attacks on data centers and is expected to be completed sometime in the first half of September 30. The Kyiv City State Administration advises passengers to pay for their rides with a bank card whenever possible or to purchase tickets in advance.
There may be temporary issues with some public transportation fare payment services in Kyiv. This is due to technical work being carried out in response to ongoing attacks on data centers. The Kyiv City State Administration reported that the work will begin on September 29 at 10:00 p.m. and is scheduled to be completed approximately in the first half of the following day, September 30.
As a result, some of the capital’s digital services may experience disruptions. These include the systems passengers use to pay for their fares. The Kyiv City State Administration noted that the problem should be temporary. Specialists will work to restore stable service and minimize any disruptions.
How to Pay for Fare
While the technical work is underway, the Kyiv City State Administration advises passengers to use a bank card to pay for their fare whenever possible. This applies to both regular bank cards and payment methods linked to them, if available on a specific mode of transportation. If it is not possible to pay for a trip with a bank card, the Kyiv City State Administration advises purchasing the necessary number of trips in advance by 10:00 PM on September 29.
This will help avoid a situation where, during technical maintenance, a new trip cannot be validated immediately. At the same time, previously purchased trips will not be lost. The Kyiv City State Administration has assured that trips purchased before the start of the technical work will still be usable. In other words, if a passenger purchased a trip by 10:00 p.m., it will remain available for validation even after the work begins.
The situation may be different for trips that a person attempts to purchase during the maintenance work. The Kyiv City State Administration has warned that these trips will temporarily not be validated. However, such trips will not disappear or be lost. Once service is restored, they will remain intact and become available for use.
How long will the disruptions last?
According to preliminary information from city authorities, the technical work will take place overnight from September 29 to 30. It is tentatively scheduled to be completed in the first half of September 30. However, the exact time when all services resume may depend on the progress of the technical work. Therefore, the Kyiv City State Administration advises passengers to anticipate possible disruptions and arrange a payment method in advance.
City authorities specifically emphasized that these are temporary restrictions. Once the work is complete, digital services are expected to return to normal operation. Kyiv residents planning to use public transportation during this period are advised not to wait until late in the evening to purchase tickets if they are unable to pay by bank card.
The technical work is being carried out amid attacks on data center infrastructure. Earlier, following Russian strikes on data centers in Kyiv and the surrounding region, there were reports of internet access issues for some subscribers.
Consequently, starting at 10:00 p.m. on September 29 and continuing through part of September 30, Kyiv may experience disruptions with certain fare payment methods. Trips purchased before the start of the technical work will remain valid, while new trips purchased during the work may temporarily fail to validate. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA).
Petro Panteleev, acting first deputy head of the KCSA, stated that the capital’s utility and energy infrastructure is better protected against attacks than it was last year, however, due to the threat of new Russian attacks involving ballistic missiles and drones, the authorities cannot guarantee that the heating season will proceed without issues.
