An organizer of a table tennis match-fixing scheme has been exposed in Kyiv

Kyiv law enforcement officials have charged a 24-year-old Kyiv resident with establishing a system to bribe professional athletes.

This was reported by the Kyiv Police.

The suspect persuaded players to intentionally lose games in order to make a guaranteed profit through bets placed at bookmakers.

The illegal activity was documented by investigators from the Obolon Police Department in collaboration with the cyber police and the prosecutor’s office.

Representatives of the Ukrainian Football Association and the National Platform for Sports Integrity also joined the investigation.

According to the investigation, the suspect used messaging apps to find athletes and offered them monetary rewards.

During face-to-face meetings, he provided detailed instructions on how the game should proceed and handed over advance payments.

For the “correct” result in a table tennis match, players were promised payments of $800.

Possessing insider information about the upcoming competition final, the organizer placed bets through intermediaries on specialized websites.

Police detained the suspect directly while he was handing over another payment of 18,600 hryvnias to one of the athletes. The detention was carried out in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The young man has been notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 369-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This article provides for liability for unlawfully influencing the results of official sports competitions through bribery.
