An archival photo of Khreshchatyk from the 1890s has been shared online

The Telegram channel of the community “KVIDO: Kyiv from the Past to the Future” published an archival photo showing what Kyiv’s main street looked like in the 1890s. The photo depicts the historic buildings of Khreshchatyk at that time, consisting mainly of two- and three-story buildings with numerous advertising signs and shops, none of which have survived to the present day.

The photograph also confirms that at the end of the 19th century, the street was a key transportation artery of the capital. The photograph clearly shows tram tracks with cars and heavy horse-drawn traffic, which differs significantly from the modern appearance of this location.

As a reminder, on the third day after a 200-year-old building was demolished at 13 Yaroslavska Street in Kyiv, the city’s mayor commented on this disregard for history.

We also recall that there is a proposal to rename the Motherland Monument in Kyiv to “Mother Ukraine.” However, the decision will be approved by the Ministry of Culture.

Starting August 11, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve is temporarily closing access to the Lower Lavra for the public, as they are obstructing the work of reserve staff and preventing them from accessing the premises.
