Alec Baldwin to face civil lawsuit over the tragedy on the set of "Rust"
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maurice Leiter has ruled to allow a civil lawsuit against Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin to proceed. The case was filed by lighting technician Sergei Svetny, who accuses the actor and the production company of negligence that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
This was reported by the BBC.
The plaintiff claims that during the incident, a bullet nearly struck him, and that violations of safety protocols on the set caused him severe emotional distress. The court rejected the defense’s arguments that liability should be limited solely to workers’ compensation, ruling that Rust Movie Productions failed to prove its employees had the necessary status. Meanwhile, the assault claim was dismissed, leaving only the negligence charges to be considered.
If the parties do not reach a settlement, court hearings will begin on October 12. This trial will mark the next stage in the long-running legal battle surrounding the death of Hutchins, who was of Ukrainian descent.
Earlier, the prosecutor’s office closed the case against Baldwin regarding the Ukrainian woman’s death.
Recall that American actor Alec Baldwin, who three years ago accidentally shot and killed Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the western “Rust,” admitted that he has no intention of watching the film. He also declined his fee for the film.
We also recall that the New Mexico prosecutor’s office responded to a motion filed by actor Alec Baldwin’s lawyers to dismiss charges of involuntary manslaughter against him in connection with the death of Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The final cut of the western "Rust," during the filming of which Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded, does not include the scene for which Alec Baldwin was charged.
