Daily Maverick publishes a column on Dolly Parton's творчество and charity

South African publication Daily Maverick published an opinion column by Judith Februarie on the творчество, charity and public initiatives of American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton. The author characterizes Parton as a performer whose activities extended beyond her music career.

Charitable initiatives

The column notes that Parton donated $1 million to COVID-19 vaccine research and also supported same-sex marriage and the Black Lives Matter movement. Februarie also writes about the Imagination Library program, through which hundreds of millions of books have been distributed to children in the United States and other countries.

The author draws attention to the song 9 to 5 and the film of the same name, in which Parton starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. In Februarie's view, this work drew attention to the role of working women.

Collaboration and the environment

The article also discusses the recording of Peace Train/Isitimela Sokuthula featuring the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. According to the author, Parton was looking for performers for this composition and chose the group after hearing its music.

The column mentions Parton's collaboration with the American Eagle Foundation: thanks to this association, more than 180 bald eagles were rehabilitated and returned to the wild. In a 2022 interview with National Geographic, the singer called for greater attention to the environment and better care for the natural world.
