Chinese dance drama returns to New York as part of third US tour

In New York, United States, the Chinese dance drama “The Tapestry of a Legendary Land” has returned as part of its third tour of the United States. Performances are scheduled from Friday through Sunday at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. This is the production’s second run in New York, ECNS reports.

A plot inspired by a scroll

The production is also titled “Poetic Dance: A Journey into a Legendary Landscape Painting.” It was created based on the scroll “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains,” also known as “Panorama of Mountains and Rivers,” from the Northern Song dynasty. The work is held at the Palace Museum in Beijing.

The performance, through a narrative that combines different time planes, tells the story of the painting’s creation and the masters whose work brought it to life. The dance production turns the scroll’s multilayered landscapes into a contemporary stage interpretation.

Previous tours

Previously, the drama completed two North American tours. Its US debut took place in late 2024 in New York and San Diego. In the summer of 2025, the production was staged in Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles and Houston.

After the New York performances, the Jiangsu Performing Arts Center plans to present the original folk dance drama “Dream of the Red Chamber” from September 11 to 13. It is set to conclude the “Masterpieces from China” series of Chinese stage productions.
