The "Barbie 2" movie may not be released due to disputes over fees
The sequel to the movie “Barbie” is in jeopardy because Warner Bros. has still not been able to reach an agreement on new contracts with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and director Greta Gerwig.
According to The New York Times, negotiations have reached an impasse over financial terms. Specifically, Ryan Gosling reportedly wants $20 million to reprise his role as Ken.
The studio must finalize agreements with the project’s key participants by December. Otherwise, the rights to the new film could revert to Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand.
“We’ve made a series of substantial offers to finalize agreements and produce the next Barbie movie. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to reach an agreement at this time,” said Warner Bros. co-chairs Pam Abdi and Michael De Luca.
The first “Barbie” film was not originally intended to be the start of a franchise, but following its box-office success, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have already developed an idea for a sequel and are ready to work on the screenplay once negotiations are settled.
