LEGO has turned Klimt's masterpiece into a 4,000-piece building set
The LEGO Group, in collaboration with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, will create a set inspired by the famous painting *The Kiss* by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
The set will consist of approximately 4,000 pieces and will be the largest LEGO set ever created based on a famous painting. Sales of the new set will begin on August 1.
Unlike the original painting, the LEGO version will have a three-dimensional effect. When assembling the model, individual elements of the composition will need to be placed in layers, which will add depth to the final piece. In addition to the paper instructions, buyers will have access to interactive 3D instructions in the LEGO Builder app.
The company enlisted the help of Stephanie Auer, curator of 19th–20th-century art at the Belvedere Museum, to work on the set. She collaborated with LEGO’s chief model designer, Milan Madje, to capture the details of the Austrian artist’s work as accurately as possible.
The set will also differ in size from the painting. While the original “The Kiss” is a square measuring 180 × 180 cm, the LEGO model will measure 60 × 54 cm and be 4 cm thick. Once assembled, it can be hung on the wall—the back features a special mounting system for nails or hooks.
LEGO has previously released sets inspired by famous works of art, including Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies,” Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” by Vincent van Gogh, “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci, “The Great Wave” by Katsushika Hokusai, and the “LOVE” sculpture by Robert Indiana.
