Rescene leader Woni tops South Korea’s K-pop idol rankings for the second time

Woni, the leader of the South Korean group Rescene, has topped the individual K-pop idol brand reputation ranking for the second consecutive month. In the August ranking by analytics company Brikorea, she received an index of 6,951,891, surpassing BTS member Jimin in second place and IVE’s Jang Wonyoung in third.

The index is compiled based on data on consumer engagement, media presence, online interaction and community activity. As The Korea Herald reports, Woni also ranked first in July. At the same time, Rescene was little known to a broad audience in South Korea just a few months ago.

Growing popularity through YouTube

Rescene debuted on March 26, 2024, with the single album Re:Scene. The group consists of Woni, Minami, Liv, Zena and May. The group’s first songs struggled to enter the country’s main music charts.

More current news is available on the UA.News Telegram channel Telegram.

In February, Woni launched the YouTube channel HelloIamWoniNiceToMeetYou, where videos featuring everyday conversations, jokes and interactions between the members were posted. In a March video, Japanese member Minami appeared in a look inspired by the Japanese gyaru subculture. Her line, “Geoje, yaho!” became an internet meme after Woni joked that residents of her hometown of Geoje might scold Minami for such an appearance.

Love Attack returns to the charts

The spread of short videos drew attention to Rescene’s music. The title track Love Attack from the first mini-album Scenedrome, released in August 2024, debuted at No. 904 on Melon’s daily chart in September of that year. The song returned to the ranking in May, entered the top 10 in June and took first place in July.

According to Melon Data Lab, by the end of June, the number of streams of Love Attack had risen by 2,019% compared with February, when Woni launched the channel. The number of searches for Rescene on Melon increased by 6,550% after the meme emerged. In July, four of the group’s songs entered the platform’s top 100 simultaneously.
