Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Celebrate Their 40th Birthdays: From Baby Stars to a Billion-Dollar Fashion Empire

The famous twin sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are celebrating their 40th birthday, having achieved the unique status of successful, self-made entrepreneurs and world-class designers.

Having started their acting careers at nine months old, they managed to completely change their career trajectory, transforming from child film stars and tabloid figures into leaders in high fashion

The sisters’ greatest achievement is their minimalist brand, The Row, which was officially valued at $1 billion in March 2026.

Born on June 13, 1986, in California, the twins found themselves on a film set while still infants, landing the role of Michelle Tanner in the popular sitcom *Full House*.

The sisters appeared on screen alternately, which allowed producers to legally extend filming hours in accordance with the strict regulations of U.S. child labor laws.

The series became a hit, and by 1993, the six-year-old Olsens had become the faces of the production company Dualstar Entertainment.

A huge number of successful media projects, films, books, and toys were released under this brand, thanks to which the sisters became the youngest self-made millionaires in U.S. history at the age of ten.

After coming of age in 2004, they bought out their managers’ shares entirely, became the sole owners of the company, and decided to leave the film industry for good to start their own fashion business.

At age 18, Mary-Kate and Ashley announced the launch of their clothing brand, The Row, named after London’s Savile Row.

Instead of capitalizing on their name, as other stars of the 2000s often did, the sisters adopted a philosophy of restraint, eschewing flashy marketing and prominent logos in favor of premium-quality materials and impeccable tailoring.

Recognition came quickly: in 2012 and 2015, the Olsens received the prestigious CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award, known in the industry as the “Oscar” for designers.

Today, The Row is owned by families connected to the management of Chanel and L’Oréal, and the brand’s fans include the world’s most famous supermodels, although the sisters themselves still refuse to take their bows after their shows.

However, the twins’ success story has not been without its challenges due to the constant and exhausting pressure from the media, under whose scrutiny they grew up.
