"Moulin Rouge!" Lurman's "Baza" won the Audience Award at the Tartuff Festival
Baz Luhrmann’s musical *Moulin Rouge!* (2001) was named the best film based on the results of an audience vote at the Estonian romantic film festival Tartuff in Tartu, according to ERR News.
The 21st PÖFF Tartuff Love Film Festival took place August 8–15. The event is organized under the auspices of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) and offers audiences open-air screenings on Tartu’s Town Hall Square.
The winner of the audience award was determined by an online vote. Viewers could rate the films across five emotional categories. “Moulin Rouge!” received the most votes in the “thrilling” and “touching” categories. It was followed in the voting by the romantic musical drama “Żejtune” by Maltese director Alex Camilleri, released this year.

Viewers named the comedy “Svadba” (“The Wedding”) by Croatian director Igor Šereg as the best film for lifting one’s spirits. Tea Sherrock’s 2016 film “Before I Met You” was named the saddest. In the “most thrilling” category, the winner was Pedro Almodóvar’s Spanish dark romantic comedy “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!” (“¡Átame!”, 1989). In total, over 1,000 votes were cast.
The screening of *Moulin Rouge!* to mark the film’s 25th anniversary set a festival record: it was attended by 1,345 viewers. Over a thousand people also attended *The Wedding* and the festival’s opening films. The total number of attendees at Tartuff’s film screenings and events was 11,000.
“Moulin Rouge!” starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The film is the final installment of Luhrmann’s “Red Curtain” trilogy, following *Strictly Ballroom* (1992) and *Romeo + Juliet* (1996).
