Kit Harington to replace Nicholas Hoult in Harry Potter series
Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s series based on the Harry Potter books, replacing Nicholas Hoult. Hoult, who was announced earlier this month as the actor for the role, left the project due to scheduling issues, BBC News World reported, citing confirmation from HBO.
Replacement in the second season
Gilderoy Lockhart is set to appear in the second season, which will adapt Joanne Rowling’s novel “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” The official Harry Potter Instagram account said that Harington will take on the role of Lockhart following a schedule-related change before the characters begin their second year at Hogwarts.
Lockhart is a self-obsessed wizard who wrote several books about his supposed encounters with dark creatures. He becomes the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts and considers himself Harry Potter’s mentor. Kenneth Branagh played the character in Warner Bros.’ film adaptation.

Harington’s experience
Harington is best known for playing Jon Snow in the series “Game of Thrones.” He also appears in the BBC and HBO financial drama “Industry.” Last year, the actor voiced Lockhart in Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.
In the new Harry Potter series, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger. John Lithgow and Nick Frost were cast as Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively. The first season, based on “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled to premiere this Christmas on HBO Max.
Director and producer Mark Mylod, who worked on “Game of Thrones,” will direct some episodes of the new series and serves as its executive producer alongside Joanne Rowling. Production of the series is expected to last around ten years, with the creators planning several seasons covering all seven books in the series.
